A Mathematical Analysis of Masaccio's Trinity

چکیده
The florentine Tommaso Cassai (1401-c.1427) 1 better known as Masaccio, has been hailed as the first great painter of the Italian Renaissance and his fresco Trinity (c.1425, Santa Maria Novella, Florence) as the first work of Western art that used full perspective. It appears that the author was inspired and actually helped by his friend Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446), the celebrated architect of the cupola of Il Duomo di Firenzi (the cathedral of S. Maria del Fiore in Florence). It is less well-known that Brunelleschi was a pioneer in perspective and that he devised a method for representing objects in depth on a flat surface by using a single vanishing point. The aim of this note is to study several questions of a mathematical nature suggested by this fresco:

The more technical chapters devoted to explaining these theoretical concepts are nicely balanced by an excellent introductory chapter on Galenic medicine in the Renaissance, and a fascinating closing chapter on Renaissance discussions of whether neutral bodies really do exist in nature and whether ageing bodies and convalescing bodies provide practical exam...

The Melkites, Jacobites, and Nestorians were the main Christian communities under Muslim rule. Several pre-Islamic Arab Christian authors wrote treatises concerning their beliefs in Arabic, some of which date back to the early Islamic centuries. The multiplicity of such polemical works suggests an intellectually open society and a degree of tolerance shown by Muslim leaders. Abu Raʾita...
متن کاملAn Analysis of the Extent of Social Inclusion and Equity Consideration in Malawi’s National HIV and AIDS Policy Review Process
Background Equity and social inclusion for vulnerable groups in policy development processes and resulting documents remain a challenge globally. Most often, the marginalization of vulnerable groups is overlooked in both the planning and practice of health service delivery. Such marginalization may occur because authorities deem the targeting of those who already have better access to healthcar...
